Portsmouth celebrates being longlisted as UK City of Culture 2029

Portsmouth is one step closer to becoming UK City of Culture 2029 after being named on the longlist for the competition.

We’re now properly in the running for the title held by Bradford in 2025 – a win that would bring national recognition and up to £10 million to support a year-long programme of cultural events and activity in 2029.

Over the past six months, we’ve already spoken to over 3000 people helping us to understand what culture means to Portsmouth today, and what it could mean for our future. Following the longlist announcement, we will shape the next stage of the bid alongside partners from across the city, building on the energy already generated. From our island city, we’re sending a clear signal – Portsmouth is ready.

Gemma Nichols, CEO of Portsmouth Creates, said: “Reaching the longlist is a significant moment for Portsmouth and for everyone who has helped shape this bid so far. But this bid is not just about winning a title – it is about unlocking potential for the city’s residents, while showcasing a side of Portsmouth that goes far beyond its traditional maritime identity.”

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council with responsibility for culture, regeneration and economic development, said: “This is an exciting step forward for Portsmouth and gives us real confidence in the strength and ambition of this bid.

Our city is rich in history, creativity and character, but what truly sets it apart is our people – the communities, organisations and individuals whose energy, talent and pride shape Portsmouth every day. This is about the people whose lives we want to impact, raising the city’s profile and building something meaningful that lives on far beyond 2029.”
